News Facts:
  • Today, Princess Margaret Hospital announced that 4108 participants raised $16.1 million in the third annual Ride to Conquer Cancer. Riders will cycle over 200 kilometres or 200 miles from Toronto to Niagara Falls with a united goal of conquering cancer in our lifetime.
  • In its first year, the 200km Ride to Conquer Cancer emerged as Canada’s largest cycling fundraising event, bringing together people from around the world. In 2009, it expanded to include three more Canadian locations: Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. These events will all take place later this summer.
  • In 2010, the Toronto Ride is even bolder with new options. A 200-mile route has been added to the original 200km route for riders looking for a new challenge. Both routes will share the same start line, camp and finish line in Niagara Falls. A virtual rider option has also been added for those unable to participate in the event but still wishing to raise funds for The Princess Margaret and joining the fight to conquer cancer in our lifetime.
  • It needs to read: In addition, donating to the event just got easier: simply text the word “Ride” to 30333. A $5 donation will be made to The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, and will be charged to your mobile phone service bill.
  • In 2010, an estimated 173,800 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and 76,200 cancer deaths will occur. As one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world, the work of The Princess Margaret is crucial in reducing the statistic that 3,200 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer each week.
  • Conquering cancer begins with a motivated team, promising programs and the most advanced technology. Funds raised through The Ride To Conquer Cancer supports the research, programs and care at The Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.
  • Following Opening Ceremonies at the CNE, participants embark on the first half of their chosen route -- 100km or 100 miles. Tonight, they camp at Mohawk College to rest up for the final stretch on Sunday, where they will journey from Hamilton to Niagara Falls. Family, friends and supporters are invited to greet and cheer on the Riders as they make their way to the finish line.
  • Swiss Chalet is the presenting sponsor for this year’s event. Other official event sponsors and suppliers include CTV, The Globe and Mail, Q107, 102.1 The Edge, AM640, PEDAL, Bicycling, Via Rail Canada, Vitamin Water, Steamwhistle, KPMG, Sobeys, AMJ Campbell Van Lines, SUGOi and EastDell Estates Winery.

  • Dr. Jonathan Irish, Chief, Department of Surgical Oncology, Princess Margaret Hospital, University Health Network
With 45 per cent of Canadian men and 40 per cent of Canadian women developing cancer in their lifetimes, the money raised through The Ride to Conquer Cancer ensures sustainability of leading cancer research initiatives at The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret. This year’s funds continue to support research platforms such as image-guided technology and robotic surgery, the clinical trials program that investigates specific cancer types, and a world-class BioBank initiative.

  • Paul Alofs, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation
We are extremely grateful and appreciate everyone’s involvement in The Ride to Conquer Cancer, which has increased momentum in the fight against cancer in the last three years. We thank riders, crew, volunteers and, of course, our donors, for sharing our vision -- to conquer cancer in our lifetime.
